The Story Behind Inclusive Design
In 2022, I was medically retired from the Marine Corps after 8 years of service.
Without the only community and purpose I had ever known, I was lost. I felt that I was destined to live a shell of a life, unearthed from the values I had built my life upon. Interior design had always been a passion, but woodworking, transforming the pieces I designed, seemed out of reach for someone with no formal training. There didn't seem to be any way I could make the transition from Veteran to designer a smooth one.
But like all great inventions, Inclusive Design was born from necessity.
Furniture refinishing, which started as a desperate attempt to furnish my home on a tight budget, became deeply meaningful for me. I saw myself in each piece of broken, unwanted furniture I collected and transformed, and every piece I created and gave new life. Now, Inclusive Design exists with the hope of making the historically exclusive home design industry inclusive for all, once piece of furniture at a time.
